Watermark on Carpet

How to remove watermarks from carpets? (brown and yellow staining caused by flood and water spillage)

Watermark on Carpet

Watermarks are a common occurrence on wool content and hessian backed carpet after flood or water spillage.

The source of these brown or yellow stains is usually related to saturation of the carpet backing and migration of hessian dyes released into the carpet fibre. Hessian (jute) dye simply works its way to the surface as the carpet dries out and forms into a brown or yellow stain.

Watermarks can occasional be removed by cleaning the area with as little moisture as possible using a low pH acidic cleaner such as Host Sponges dry carpet cleaner. Excellent results have been achieved using Host Sponges, however, the problem can re-occur within just a few days and it may be necessary to carry out a second or even a third clean to remove any residual staining. Unfortunately watermarks are the most difficult to remove, the rate of recovery is unpredictable and often renders many carpets permanently stained.
